Total Knee Replacement
Total Knee Replacement (TKR)
Total knee replacement is the most common joint replacement surgery in India. It is typically recommended when the knee joint is severely damaged due to arthritis, trauma, or degenerative joint disease, causing persistent pain and limited mobility.
What Happens in a Knee Replacement?
In this procedure, the damaged ends of the thigh bone (femur), shin bone (tibia), and sometimes the knee cap (patella) are carefully removed and replaced with artificial components. These implants are usually made of cobalt-chrome alloys and medical-grade polyethylene. In recent years, more advanced materials like titanium and oxinium (oxidized zirconium) are being used for improved performance and longevity.
Revision Joint Replacement
Sometimes, a previously replaced joint can fail after several years due to:
Wear and tear
Infection
Loosening of the implant
Fracture or injury
Mechanical failure
This condition requires a revision joint replacement, which is a more complex and demanding surgery compared to the initial (primary) replacement.
Why is Revision Surgery More Complex?
The anatomy may be altered from the first surgery.
There may be bone loss, infection, or scar tissue.
Specialized surgical planning, advanced tools, and custom implants are required.
It demands a surgeon with expertise and experience in complex joint procedures.
At SV Ortho Care, Dr. VijayKumar D has extensive experience in handling both primary and revision joint replacements, ensuring that every procedure is precisely tailored to the patient’s condition for optimal outcomes.
