Meniscus Tear
Meniscal Injury and Treatment at SV Ortho Care
The meniscus is a crescent-shaped, rubbery structure located between the bones in your knee. Once thought to be unimportant, we now know the meniscus plays a vital role as a natural shock absorber, protecting your knee cartilage and helping prevent arthritis.
What is the Meniscus?
Each knee has two menisci ā one on the inner side and one on the outer side. These fibrocartilage pads cushion your knee and help evenly distribute weight across the joint.
How Does Meniscus Injury Happen?
Meniscus tears commonly occur from sudden twisting or turning movements, often during sports or physical activity. When the knee bends or twists forcefully, the meniscus can get pinched or torn between the bones. You might feel a popping sensation, followed by swelling within a few hours.
Sometimes, meniscus tears happen gradually due to age-related wear and tear.
Treatment Options at SV Ortho Care
The treatment depends on the type, size, and location of the tear, as well as your age and activity level. Options include:
Rest with walking aid to reduce stress on the knee
Intra-articular injections for pain relief and inflammation control
Arthroscopic meniscectomy: minimally invasive removal of the torn meniscus piece
Arthroscopic meniscus repair: sewing the torn meniscus back together when possible
Arthroscopic meniscus root repair: fixing tears near the meniscus attachment
Arthroscopic meniscus saucerization: reshaping the meniscus for better function
MATS (Meniscal Allograft Transplant Surgery): replacing damaged meniscus with donor tissue
Augmented open alignment correction osteotomy: surgical correction of knee alignment in advanced cases
How Does Arthroscopy Help?
Arthroscopy is a keyhole surgery that allows your doctor to treat meniscal tears through small incisions using a camera and tiny instruments. This approach results in less pain, faster recovery, and minimal scarring.
Depending on the injury, the surgeon may either trim the damaged part of the meniscus or repair it to preserve as much healthy tissue as possible.
At SV Ortho Care, our knee specialists will thoroughly evaluate your injury and recommend the best personalized treatment to help you get back on your feet safely and quickly.
