Patella Instability
MPFL Reconstruction
The Medial Patella-Femoral Ligament (MPFL) is a key ligament that helps keep your kneecap (patella) stable and prevents it from slipping out of place (dislocating). When the kneecap dislocates repeatedly or seriously, MPFL reconstruction surgery may be needed.
What Causes Kneecap Dislocation?
Kneecap dislocation can happen due to:
A direct blow to the knee
Twisting injuries to the lower leg
Sudden strong muscle contractions
Congenital issues like shallow or misshapen joint surfaces
How Does MPFL Reconstruction Work?
In this surgery, the damaged ligament is rebuilt using a piece of tendon from another part of your body or a synthetic graft. The surgeon reconstructs the MPFL to hold the kneecap securely in the groove of the thigh bone (trochlear groove), preventing it from slipping out again.
Recovery and Expectations
After surgery, physical therapy is essential to regain strength and stability in your knee muscles. This rehab usually lasts 3 to 6 months. Most patients can return to full, unrestricted activities within 6 months to 1 year after surgery.
